Guidelines for proper post surgery aftercare

It doesn’t matter if you’ve had a joint replaced; a hysterectomy or a bypass operation, the body requires extra nutrients to heal, so focusing on nutrition can mean the difference between bouncing back and a lengthy recovery.
On average, a person can expect to lose 5 to 10 percent of total body weight after surgery. To infuse the body with calories and nutrition, consider protein first. Protein is needed to repair tissue, slow muscle catabolism and decrease the inflammatory phase. Post-operative protein requirements range from 1.5 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. For elective surgery, the low end of the range is sufficient. For major surgery, the higher end of the spectrum is more appropriate.

Some good sources of protein include:
Meats, like steaks and veal
Poultry
Low fat cheeses
Beans and legumes
Whey powder
Eggs
Soybeans, tofu and tempeh
Fish

Happy Thanksgiving!

Creating the basis of meals for weeks to come, Thanksgiving leftovers are often as delightful as the meal itself. turkey can be shredded, sliced, and diced for an assortments of salads, pastas, soups, and sandwiches. Doesn't this just make your mouth water? For those of us who are more epicurially challenged, A-1 Home Care presents this Spoonful.com gallery of post holiday leftover recipes.

Pulled Turkey Sandwiches:
What you'll need
  • 2 thighs and 1 wing from a cooked turkey
  • 2 cups barbecue sauce, or to taste
  • Sandwich rolls
Notes: Yields 8 servings

How to make it

  1. Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Arrange turkey parts in a shallow baking dish, then douse them with barbecue sauce (if your sauce is very thick, thin it first with a little water or broth until it's more saucy than sticky). Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake, checking occasionally to see if pan looks too dry and adding a splash of water if needed, until the meat is falling off the bones, about 1 1/2 hours.
  2. Use two forks or your fingers to shred the meat (be sure to pick out all the skin and bones) and stir in additional sauce if you like. (Alternatively, you can cook this on the stove top: Pull the meat off the thighs and wing, shred it, put it in a saucepan along with the barbecue sauce, and gently simmer, covered, until meat is tender and sauce is thick, about 1 hour.) Spoon the turkey onto rolls and serve.
